According to the Ontario Provincial Police, a nine-year-old boy has died as a result of a single-vehicle rollover on the Queen Elizabeth Way in Oakville. The incident occurred in the westbound lanes of the QEW, near Burloak Drive, shortly after midnight on Monday.
In a news release, authorities reported that a pickup truck struck a ditch and rolled over, ultimately coming to rest in an upright position. The 38-year-old driver, who resides in Hamilton, was seriously injured and transported to the hospital. Tragically, a nine-year-old passenger was ejected from the vehicle and was taken to the hospital without vital signs, where he was later pronounced dead.
Another passenger, a 28-year-old, was not injured and remained at the scene, according to police. The police statement noted that the potential lack of seatbelt use is being investigated as a contributing factor in the collision. The westbound lanes of the highway were closed for about six hours following the accident and the investigation into the cause of the crash is still in progress.
