J. Row’s latest full-length release, ROWVEMBER, proved to be an enticing and eclectic affair, the sound of an artist spreading his wings and making music that swoops across all manner of soundscapes, from pop to R&B, soul to hip-hop, the old, the new, the what was and the what might yet be.
And central to that sonic stall he so deftly set out are songs like That’s Just It, modern urban music for a contemporary urban scene.
It’s an infectious song that rolls along on skittering, trap beats and sultry grooves, lush backing harmonies, and beguiling electronica. But, as is always the way with music from such quarters, the lyrics sit front and center, looking the listener unflinchingly in the eye, honest and uncompromising.
J. Row weaves slow but deliberate words that dance and dodge their way across the music’s topline. And although they seem to move in a relaxed and understated fashion, there is a toughness and tautness hidden in their heart.
The perfect calling card for a musically great and lyrically significant album.
